On Bodies and Dances
Moviment column by Marina Santo.
Yes, that’s exactly what you read: Carnival is not joyful, and the author of this phrase is none other than Caetano Veloso. Struck by the power of this contradiction—something only a great Brazilian poet could articulate—Natalia Fernandes (São Paulo, 1987) takes Caetano’s words (as the true Tropicalista she is) and gives them the title of her latest contemporary dance piece.
Though piece might not be the right word: it’s a music show without instruments or musical talent (her own description). The performance is built around a delightful playlist that weaves through stories, memories, and desires, all channeled by a body that asserts itself beautifully in space and time—no frills attached.
“Brazilian music was my school. Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Chico (Buarque), Tom Zé, Jorge Ben, and Gilberto Gil were like teachers to me—father and mother. They were the family that helped me find my place in the world.”
Despite her solid career as a choreographer and dancer, the artist had never before felt the call to bring Brazil into her creations.
After 12 years living abroad, that need emerged with force. "Through Brazilian music, I understand my country. I understand where I come from. The words and poetry woven into the music are my instruction manual," says Natalia.
The most recent run of "Carnival Is Not Joyful" took place in Madrid, featuring fellow São Paulo native DJ Cigarra, where the audience and the dancer threw themselves onto the sunlit, effervescent dance floor in true Brazilian style.
The city got a taste (albeit a Tiny Desk version) of a uniquely free celebration—one that merges bodies and music through codes not born from European logic.
For a moment, perhaps, those who’ve truly lived Brazil in their bodies might have understood that, indeed, Carnival is not joyful.
I was born in Rio de Janeiro and have lived in Europe for two decades, mostly in Madrid. From an early age, I studied various dance styles, and I consider the street, parties, and nightlife my greatest schools of movement. For 15 years, I’ve guided people of all backgrounds to reconnect with themselves through body awareness and the joy of their own motion. I’m a mother and a fervent lover of Brazilian music.
